The Touchon & Co 21 jewel Movement

Touchon & Co 21 jewel movements are few and far between and those I have seen lead me to far from satisfactory conclusions, so the information here remains open to discussion.

What I will do is display details of two 21 jewel Touchon watches that I currently own and highlight the obvious differences between each one and also the more common 19 jewel models.

The first one is fully signed Touchon & Co on the movement and dial, and dates from around 1910. The ruby jewelling is quite small by Touchon standards although the gear train is solid gold alloy. The finish is superb and although jewel count is not shown, dismantling reveals 21 jewels. Early Touchons like this one had screw micrometer regulators whereas later ones all had swing pointers.  Distinct visual differences between this and the more common 19 jewel type are the shape of the barrel bridge, the presence of woolfs tooth winding and most unusually, the layout being almost a perfect negative of the usual Touchon arrangement.

The next one is signed only by the Retailer, F.F. Bonnet, but is in fact by Touchon & Co. This time, the number of jewels is shown and the layout has reverted to the standard Touchon arrangement. The gear train is gilded .... very unusual for Touchon although the micrometer regulator is still present. The centre bridge design is also very different to the usual type.
